Abstract

Biofuel is an environmentally friendly source of alternative renewable energy that is obtained from natural crop. This research study application of non-pressure reduction and pressure-reduction distillation method to distill crude rubber tree oil for producing refined oil. In an experiment, tempuration applied to non-pressure reduction and pressure reduction methods were 250°C and 150°C, respectively. The product of experiment obtained the refined oil and sticky rubber remaining. The refined oil of both methods was compared fuel characterization following the standard of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This testing was for clarifying the optimal characteristic when compared with diesel oil made from commercial petroleum. According to the results of an experiment in which 2L of crude rubber tree oil was put through both non-pressure reduction and pressure reduction distillation processes, the refined oil drained out in 35 and 27 minutes, respectively. When 3L and 4L of crude rubber tree oil were used in the distillation operations, the findings revealed that 3L of the crude oil produced tanspearence refined oil while 4L of the crude oil produced black refined oil. Crude rubber tree oil had a viscosity of 13.92 cSt, and non-pressure distillation produced a result of 8.047 cSt with a brown color characteristic. After implementing the pressure reduction distillation method, the viscosity was lowered to 4.71 cSt and exhibited yellow when receiving 70–75% of the volume; the color changed to brown or black when receiving 92% of the volume. The refined oil's fuel properties were similar to those of commercial petroleum. The results of the American Petroleum Institute (API), Cetane Index, Specific Gravity, Viscosity, Percent Impurity, Copper Corrosion, Flash Point, Average Distilled at Atmosphere, and Sulfer Content tests, the values were 0.9215, 22, 22, 4.71 cSt, 0.003%vol, 1a, 54°C, 250°C, and 0.0 wt%, respectively.
