Professional Competencies among Executive Secretaries at National University of Laos

Abstract

This study aimed at 1) examining the professional competencies among executive secretaries at National University of Laos; 2) exploring the needs for professional development among them; 3) comparing the differences in the perceived professional competencies and needs for professional development among the participants.  The sample group included 73 executive assistants and executive secretaries from faculties, institutes, centres, and offices in the sampled university, through a purposive sampling method. The present study employed a quantitative research approach, collecting the data with a 5-rating scale questionnaire. The statistical package employed in the study included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Independence t-test. The results reveal that the sample group rated their competencies between Moderate to High levels across the four dimensions. Looking closer to the analysis, three of which were scored at a High level (ICT skills, Administration skills, Human relation skills, respectively); however, the Foreign languages skills was found to be at a Moderate level. Regarding the needs for professional development, the sample group scored at a High level across the four dimensions (the Foreign languages skills, Administration skills, Human relation skills, and ICT skills, respectively). An analysis of Independence t-test shows that there were statistical significances in the tested variables among age and experience groups. To strengthen the secretarial work, the leadership should put a great care towards roles and promotion of office administration and secretary, including the widening opportunities for lifelong learning among executive secretaries and office workers.
