An analysis of the competitiveness of Thai pineapple exported to China

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to 1) investigate the competitiveness of Thai pineapples exported to China by applying the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCA) during 2015 – 2022; 2) investigate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of Thai pineapples based on SWOT analysis to analyze the competitive position of Thai pineapples in the Chinese market.

            Results of the comparative analysis study. After a comparative analysis of the competitive advantages of Thai pineapple exports using the Revealed Comparative Advantage Analysis and the SWOT analysis, the corresponding conclusions were drawn: Thai pineapple industry has remarkable advantages but also some weaknesses. The comparative analysis shows cases where Thailand has a clear advantage over the Philippines in certain years. Looking at Thai exports, particularly the share of pineapple exports to China, it is clear that Thailand consistently lags behind the Philippines. This discrepancy positions Thailand within a market trend known as the "counter-trend". This phenomenon is due to various factors and circumstances that favor the Philippines in its pineapple exports.
